Is Turnitin Free for Students? How Access and Cost Work

Turnitin is free for most students because schools pay for it, but you cannot buy it yourself. See who pays, what schools are charged and what free options exist.

Plagino cover: is Turnitin free for students, with list prices per FTE that schools pay and a note that most students pay nothing.

The short answer

For most students, yes: you do not pay Turnitin, because your school or college buys the license. Turnitin does not sell to individuals, so you cannot buy it yourself. You reach it through your learning platform or with a class ID and enrollment key from your instructor.

Is Turnitin free for students?

Yes in practice, but not because Turnitin is a free product. Students do not pay Turnitin; the school, college or other organization pays for a license. Turnitin's products page says student access is typically provided through the educational institution or instructor, and that students usually reach Turnitin through their learning management system (LMS) or as their course directs. Its purchase guide adds that if your school already has a subscription, you may be able to register for access at no additional cost.

The other side of that is just as firm. Turnitin says it does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions, so a student whose school has no license cannot buy their way in. Free also does not mean on demand. Your instructor decides which assignments use Turnitin, and your school decides which features are switched on.

Who pays for Turnitin if students do not?

The institution pays. Turnitin's purchase guide says subscriptions are designed for educational institutions, that an administrator requests a quote through its contact page, and that pricing depends on the size and requirements of the institution. Turnitin publishes no price list. The next sections show what one public price schedule lists, so you can see the scale of what a school pays.

How do students get access to Turnitin?

You get access through your school, in one of two ways. If your school connects Turnitin to its LMS, you submit to a Turnitin assignment inside the LMS and need no separate sign-up. If your instructor uses the Turnitin website, you need a login that your instructor gives you. Turnitin's guide says you can only join an account if your institution has already set Turnitin up. The steps below cover the website route.

  1. 1

Look for a Turnitin assignment in your course. Check your syllabus and your LMS, such as Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle or Brightspace. If the assignment is already linked to Turnitin, submit there and you are done.

  2. 2

Ask your instructor for a Class ID and enrollment key. If the course uses the Turnitin website, your instructor must give you both. Turnitin's help center says its technical support cannot provide a Class ID or enrollment key under any circumstances.

  3. 3

Create your student profile. Go to turnitin.com, select Log In, then New User, then Student. Enter the enrollment key, your name, your email and a password of at least 12 characters with a number, upper and lower case letters and a special character.

  4. 4

Or wait for the welcome email. Instructors can also enroll students directly. If yours does, you receive a welcome email with an Activate Account link, and you set your password from there. Check your junk folder if it does not arrive.

  5. 5

Submit before the key expires. Enrollment keys are valid for 14 days and an instructor can generate a new one. If your key says it has expired or does not work, ask your instructor for the current one.

Joining a class is only the first step. What you see afterward still depends on the school's settings. The Turnitin Class ID and enrollment key guide tells instructors never to post the credentials publicly, which is why you should only take them from your instructor. If your course runs on Canvas, our guide to whether Canvas has AI detection explains how the school-side setup works.

How much does Turnitin cost schools?

Turnitin sets prices case by case, so there is no single number, but one public schedule gives a benchmark. OMNIA Partners, a purchasing cooperative for public institutions, posts a Turnitin price list for contract 159581 with a list price per full-time equivalent (FTE) student for each product. Discounts apply based on FTE, so a real quote can differ. The table shows the Turnitin lines most relevant to students, as read in October 2026.

Source: OMNIA Partners Turnitin price list for agreement 159581, file dated July 2026. These are list prices for one cooperative contract, not what every school pays, and the excerpt read does not state the contract term. Plagino has not verified what any specific school pays.

A short worked example shows the scale, using list prices only. A school with 10,000 FTE on Feedback Studio at $5.40 would be quoted $54,000 at list. The same school on Feedback Studio Essential at $6.70 would be quoted $67,000, so the AI detection line adds $13,000 at list, or $1.30 per FTE. The same $1.30 gap appears between Originality Check and Originality Check with Originality. These are illustrative sums from the schedule, not a quote.

The point for a student is simple. Someone is paying for your access, and AI detection is a priced extra. A school with Turnitin does not necessarily pay for the AI feature, which is why one college can show an AI score and another cannot.

Is the Turnitin AI checker free?

No. It is part of what a school licenses, not something a student gets free or alone. Turnitin's page on its AI detector says that from January 2024 the detector is only available to customers when they license Originality with their existing product. Turnitin's AI FAQ adds that administrators can switch it off and that the indicator and report are not visible to students.

It was briefly free. Turnitin launched AI writing detection in 2023 as a preview, and a Macquarie University help page says Turnitin told clients the preview would be free until January 2024, after which only certain products would be covered. That history explains why older pages still call the AI checker free. The pricing schedule above shows it is a separate paid line today. Our guide on whether Turnitin detects AI covers what the detector does and does not show.

Why can some students see Turnitin but not the AI score?

Three separate switches decide it: whether the school licenses the AI add-on, whether an administrator enabled it, and whether the instructor shares the report. A student can submit to Turnitin normally while all three are closed. That is by design, and it is why you should ask your instructor, not guess, what your course uses.

Can you get a free Turnitin account without a school?

No. Turnitin's purchase guide says it does not offer subscriptions directly to individuals for Feedback Studio and Similarity. Its one individual option is iThenticate, a separate product for researchers. iThenticate lists individual credits at $125 for a single manuscript of up to 25,000 words, and $300 for up to three manuscripts or one up to 75,000 words, each with 5 free revisions. Both packages say AI writing detection is not available, and iThenticate's credits guide confirms AI writing reports are not available for these submissions. The table compares every route as of October 2026.

Are free Turnitin class IDs and accounts online legitimate?

No route that Turnitin supports involves a free class ID from the internet. A Class ID and enrollment key come from your own instructor, and the key is valid for only 14 days. Turnitin tells instructors never to post them publicly, so a pair taken from a public site is unlikely to work, and it is not a way Turnitin gives access. Entering your email and password on a site that promises free Turnitin could also hand those details to a stranger, so treat the offer with suspicion.

Is there a free Turnitin checker or AI detector?

Not from Turnitin, but you have two legitimate routes. Inside Turnitin, a student can only check a paper first through what the school allows. Turnitin's help center says a student cannot self-check a paper without submitting it to an assignment unless the institution enabled Draft Coach. Outside Turnitin, a separate checker can give you a second look at citations and AI-sounding passages. Our page on the closest free alternative to the Turnitin AI checker explains why no outside tool can reproduce your school's number.

For AI detection, Plagino ran one measured test. In its March 2026 benchmark of 1,000 documents, Turnitin caught 98.2% of AI-written documents and wrongly flagged 1.4% of human-written ones, while Plagino caught 97.4% and wrongly flagged 0.8%. Plagino built one of the tools in that test and it was one corpus in one run, so read the benchmark page as a snapshot. Plagino has not tested the Turnitin report resellers, so it cannot say whether their results match anything.

What does Plagino's free plan include?

Plagino's free plan gives you 3 scans a month with no card, and each scan includes both a plagiarism check and an AI detector check. You upload a Word (.docx) file of up to 10 MB. Its plagiarism checker compares your text with open-access papers indexed by CORE and with your own earlier scans, not with the open web or Turnitin's private repository. The pricing page shows Pro at $19 a month for 20 scans a day.

Your file and report stay in your account until you delete the scan, and uploaded documents are not used to train AI models. The privacy policy has the details, and you can create a free account to try it. For a paid, web-based alternative, our Plagino vs Scribbr comparison sets out what each tool checks, and our guide to the best plagiarism checker for students compares more options.

What are the limits of this guide?

The Turnitin access rules come from its help center and guides as read in October 2026, and a school can configure its account differently. The price figures come from one cooperative schedule and do not describe any particular school's contract. Plagino's only testing is the March 2026 benchmark of AI detection. It has not benchmarked iThenticate or any report reseller, and it is not affiliated with Turnitin.

Frequently asked questions

Is Turnitin free for students?

Yes in practice, because the school pays and the student does not. Turnitin sells only to institutions, so you cannot buy it yourself. Access comes through your learning platform or a class ID and enrollment key from your instructor.

Can I use Turnitin for free without being part of a school?

No. Turnitin says it does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions, and you can only join an account that an institution has already set up. A researcher can buy iThenticate credits, which is a different product.

How much does Turnitin cost?

Turnitin publishes no price list, and it quotes each institution based on size and needs. One public cooperative schedule lists list prices of $4.65 to $8.95 per full-time equivalent student for its education products. Individual iThenticate credits cost $125 or $300.

Can I buy a Turnitin subscription for myself?

No. Turnitin says it does not offer subscriptions directly to individuals for Feedback Studio and Similarity. The closest option it points to is iThenticate credits, which suit manuscripts and theses, and do not include AI writing detection.

Is Turnitin AI detection free?

No. Turnitin says that from January 2024 its AI detector is only available to customers that license Originality. It was free during a 2023 preview. Today a school must pay for it, administrators can switch it off, and students cannot see the report.

How do I get a Turnitin class ID and enrollment key?

Ask your instructor, because Turnitin's own support cannot provide either one. An enrollment key is valid for 14 days, and your instructor can generate a new one. You use the pair to create a student profile at turnitin.com.

Can instructors use Turnitin for free?

Not on their own. Turnitin sells to schools and organizations, and instructors get access when their institution licenses it. An administrator requests a quote, and a Turnitin representative follows up within 3 business days.

Is iThenticate a cheaper way to use Turnitin?

No, it is a separate product for manuscripts. Individual credits cost $125 for one document of up to 25,000 words or $300 for up to three. They do not include AI writing detection, and they do not give you the Turnitin report your instructor sees.

Are free Turnitin class IDs or accounts from websites safe?

No. Class IDs and keys come from your instructor, keys expire after 14 days, and Turnitin tells instructors not to post them publicly. A site offering free access is not a route Turnitin supports, and you may hand over your email or password.

Will a free checker show the same score as Turnitin?

No. Free checkers use different databases and models, and Turnitin's result depends on your school's settings and a private repository of student papers. Use a free checker to find citations to fix, not to predict your score.

Is Plagino's free plan really free?

Yes. It gives 3 scans a month with no card, and each scan includes the plagiarism check and the AI check. Files must be Word (.docx) up to 10 MB, and Pro costs $19 a month for 20 scans a day.

Is Plagino affiliated with Turnitin?

No. Plagino is an independent detector and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Turnitin. In its March 2026 benchmark it measured Turnitin as a reference, which is not the same as matching its score.
