The short answer
Students cannot run Turnitin's AI checker themselves, because Turnitin sells only to schools and hides the AI score from students. The closest free option is an independent detector. In Plagino's March 2026 benchmark of 1,000 documents it caught 97.4% of AI text against Turnitin's 98.2%, but no outside tool will reproduce your school's score.
Can students use the Turnitin AI checker themselves?
No. Students cannot buy or open Turnitin's AI checker on their own. Turnitin says it does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions, and that its similarity and grading services are sold only to schools, universities and organizations. The one individual product it points to is iThenticate, where independent users buy credits to run similarity checks.
The AI checker is narrower still. Turnitin's FAQ says AI writing detection is available only to customers that license Turnitin Originality, and that administrators can switch it off. Even where it is on, the indicator and report are not visible to students. An instructor can download the AI report as a PDF and share it, but that is the instructor's choice. In practice the Turnitin AI checker is something your school runs on your paper, not something you can run yourself.
Can Turnitin Draft Coach show me my AI score?
No. When an institution turns it on, Draft Coach lets students run a similarity check, a citation check and a grammar check inside Google Docs or Microsoft Word, according to Turnitin's help centre. A University of Missouri System help page states that the similarity check does not detect possible use of AI in writing, so Draft Coach will not preview the number your instructor sees.
Can I resubmit to my assignment to see the score?
Only for similarity. If your instructor allows resubmissions, you can resubmit up to three times in 24 hours before the due date, and each upload overwrites the one before. That gives you a fresh Similarity Report, but the AI indicator stays hidden from students unless your instructor shares it. You also cannot delete a submission once it is in, so a draft you upload this way is on record.
If you want a practice run inside Turnitin itself, the only route is to ask your instructor to set up a separate practice assignment. Whether they say yes is their call and your school's policy.
What is the closest free alternative to the Turnitin AI checker?
The closest free option is an independent AI detector that works at sentence level and publishes how it was tested. Plagino's free plan covers 3 scans a month, accepts .docx files up to 10 MB, and returns an AI percentage with sentence-level highlights and a downloadable PDF report. Other tools have free tiers too: Originality.ai offers 3 free scans a day of up to 2,000 words, and our guide to the best alternatives to Turnitin compares eight tools and what each one checks against.
Choose on three things. Look for evidence the tool was tested on real documents against Turnitin, sentence-level highlights you can act on, and a plain deletion policy. Free tools differ most on that last point, so read where your file goes before you upload a thesis.
How do I check my draft before I submit it?
These steps take about ten minutes with the free Plagino AI detector, once you have created an account. Use the result as a prompt to revise, not as a pass mark.
- 1
Save your final draft as a .docx file. Plagino reads Word documents up to 10 MB, one at a time. In Google Docs, use File, then Download, then Microsoft Word (.docx).
- 2
Create a free account. The free plan has 3 scans a month and asks for no card.
- 3
Upload the file and run the scan. Start a new scan, drop in your file, and wait while the report is built. The page updates when the scan finishes.
- 4
Read the highlights one sentence at a time. Treat each highlighted sentence as a question: is this my reasoning, in my own words? A highlight is a prompt to reread, not a finding of misconduct.
- 5
Revise with substance, then rescan once. Where a passage is generic, add your own argument, example or source. Rescan once to see the change. Rewording sentences just to push a number down is not the goal and will not make the work yours.
- 6
Keep your drafts and notes. Save your outline, notes and version history. If a question about your writing ever comes up, that record shows how the work developed.
How does a free checker compare with Turnitin's AI detector?
In Plagino's March 2026 benchmark, Turnitin and Plagino finished first and second. Turnitin flagged 98.2% of AI-written documents and Plagino 97.4%, while Plagino wrongly flagged 0.8% of human-written documents against Turnitin's 1.4%. The confidence intervals overlap on both measures, so read the two tools as close rather than one as better.
We ran 1,000 documents through every tool on default settings: 500 AI-written (GPT-4o, Claude and Gemini, some lightly human-edited) and 500 human-written. The table shows document-level results, with a 95% interval for each rate. The full method, limitations and raw data are on the benchmark page.
What this benchmark does not show
It is one corpus in one month, run by a company with a product in the comparison. Turnitin has also kept updating its model since, as its model release notes record, so a March 2026 result is a snapshot and not a permanent ranking. It does not tell you what your own paper would score at your school, which is why the next section matters.
What independent studies found
A February 2026 paper in the International Journal for Educational Integrity tested Turnitin and Originality.ai on 192 texts, including English-as-a-foreign-language student writing, AI output and human-AI hybrids. Turnitin scored 0.61 overall accuracy against 0.69 for Originality.ai, and the authors report that both tools performed poorly on hybrid texts. Their preprint abstract concludes that neither detector is reliable enough to be the sole basis for a misconduct decision.
A June 2026 paper in the same journal tested GPTZero, Pangram, Copyleaks and Turnitin on 160 documents. It reports that Pangram performed best, and puts Turnitin at 60.0% accuracy on hybrid papers and 50.0% on papers that were AI-generated and then reworded. Different corpora give different answers, which is the main reason to treat any single accuracy figure, including ours, as one data point.
| Detector | AI text caught | 95% interval | Human text wrongly flagged | 95% interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turnitin | 98.2% | 96.6–99.1% | 1.4% | 0.7–2.9% |
| Plagino (this site) | 97.4% | 95.6–98.5% | 0.8% | 0.3–2.0% |
| Originality.ai | 95.6% | 93.4–97.1% | 4.1% | 2.7–6.2% |
| Copyleaks | 91.3% | 88.5–93.5% | 2.2% | 1.2–3.9% |
| GPTZero | 88.9% | 85.8–91.4% | 5.7% | 4.0–8.1% |
| Academi.cx | 86.4% | 83.1–89.1% | 1.9% | 1.0–3.5% |
| TurnDetect | 79.5% | 75.7–82.8% | 6.3% | 4.5–8.8% |
Will a free checker show the same score as my school's Turnitin?
No. Different detectors use different models, so no outside tool can reproduce the number your instructor sees. Plagino's own FAQ says the same: it runs its own detector against open academic sources, and its scores will not match any particular institution's tool.
Turnitin's result also depends on conditions you cannot see from outside. The table lists the main ones, using Turnitin's AI writing FAQ, AI Writing Report guide and file requirements.
| Factor | What Turnitin documents | Why an outside checker differs |
|---|---|---|
| Licence and settings | AI detection needs a Turnitin Originality licence, and administrators can switch it off. | Your school's setup decides whether and how your paper is scored. An outside tool has no such setup. |
| What gets scored | Only prose sentences in long-form writing, from 300 to 30,000 words. Bullets, tables and code are not reliably scored. | Other tools score different parts of a file, so the same document can produce different percentages. |
| Low scores | Scores from 1% to 19% appear as an asterisk (*%) with no highlights, because false positives are more common there. | An outside tool may show a low number that Turnitin would hide. |
| Languages | English, Spanish, Japanese and Arabic. Paraphraser and bypasser detection is English only. | Language coverage varies by tool. |
| What the percentage means | Turnitin says a document scored at 50% AI could contain as much as 65% AI writing, because it prefers missing some AI text to wrongly flagging human text. | Each vendor sets its own balance between missed AI text and false flags. |
The practical rule: use an outside checker to find sentences worth rereading, never as a forecast of your school's number.
Can a website really give you the exact Turnitin report?
Treat that claim with caution. Turnitin says it sells only to institutions and that the AI indicator and report are not visible to students. A site promising "the same report your professor sees" would need access that Turnitin says it does not sell to individuals.
We have not tested those services and cannot verify how they work, so we make no claim about any one of them. What you can do is check each claim against what Turnitin publishes before you upload a paper.
| Claim you may see | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| "The exact Turnitin report" | Turnitin says individuals cannot buy a licence. How does this site get one, and can it show you? |
| "Your paper is never stored" | Is that written in a privacy policy you can read, and can you delete your file yourself? |
| "100% accurate" | Turnitin itself targets a false positive rate under 1%, not zero. What test supports a stronger claim? |
| "Matches your school's score" | Your school's result depends on its licence, settings and model version. How could an outside site know them? |
Before you upload a thesis or a graded paper anywhere, read where the file goes. Plagino keeps files in your account so you can reopen a report, and you can delete any of them from your dashboard at any time. The details are in the privacy policy.
What does the Turnitin AI percentage mean, and what is a safe score?
There is no universally safe score. Turnitin's report guide defines the percentage as the share of qualifying prose that its model judges likely AI-generated, or AI-generated and then run through a paraphrasing or bypasser tool. A result of 90% therefore means the model flags about nine tenths of the prose it scored, not nine tenths of the file, because bullets, tables and code are left out.
The display has three states worth knowing. 0% means no qualifying text was flagged. An asterisk means AI was detected between 1% and 19%, with the figure and highlights hidden. From 20% to 100%, the percentage and highlights are shown. Turnitin states the score "should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student", and each school sets its own policy on what to do with it. Our explainer on whether Turnitin detects AI covers who sees the score and what it can and cannot check.
What should you do if a checker flags your draft?
Reread the highlighted sentences before you change anything. A flag asks whether the sentence carries your own reasoning. It is not a verdict: plain, formulaic or second-language prose can read as predictable whether a person or a model wrote it, and a 2023 Stanford-led study found that several AI detectors misclassified more than half of TOEFL essays by non-native English speakers as AI-generated.
Then keep proof of process: your outline, notes, drafts and version history. If your school raises a concern, our guides on why AI detectors give false positives and what to do if you are falsely accused of using AI explain how to ask for the report and what evidence helps. Plagino is built for checking and revising your own writing, not for disguising AI text, and Turnitin says its English detector also looks for AI bypasser tools.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Turnitin AI checker for students?
Not from Turnitin. Turnitin sells only to schools and does not offer individual or free student licences. Independent detectors such as Plagino offer free scans, but they use their own models and will not reproduce your school's Turnitin score.
Can I buy Turnitin as an individual?
No. Turnitin says it does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions. Its individual product is iThenticate, where independent users buy credits for similarity checks.
Can students see the Turnitin AI score?
Not by default. Turnitin says the AI writing indicator and report are not visible to students. An instructor can download the AI report as a PDF and choose to share it.
Can I check my paper in Turnitin before I submit it?
Only if your school allows it. You can use Draft Coach if your institution enabled it, resubmit to an assignment that allows resubmissions, or ask your instructor for a practice assignment. None of these routes shows students the AI score by default.
How many times can I resubmit to a Turnitin assignment?
Up to three times in 24 hours in a Standard Assignment, if your instructor enabled resubmissions and the due date has not passed. Each resubmission overwrites the previous one, and the attempts are shared with your instructor.
Is Plagino as accurate as Turnitin?
In Plagino's March 2026 benchmark the two were close. Turnitin caught 98.2% of AI-written documents and Plagino 97.4%, with false flags of 1.4% and 0.8%. The intervals overlap, the corpus was one run, and Plagino built one of the tools, so use it as one data point.
Will Plagino give the same score as my school's Turnitin?
No. Plagino runs its own detector, and no outside tool can reproduce the number Turnitin shows your instructor. Use Plagino to find sentences worth rereading, not to predict a score.
What does an asterisk mean on a Turnitin AI report?
It means Turnitin detected AI writing above 0% but below 20%. It hides the exact figure and the highlights in that range because its testing found false positives are more common at low percentages.
How accurate is the Turnitin AI checker?
Turnitin says it aims to keep false positives under 1% for documents with more than 20% AI writing, and accepts that it may miss some AI text to do so. Independent studies on different corpora report lower accuracy, particularly for texts that mix human and AI writing.
Does Turnitin detect ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?
Yes, where the school has AI detection switched on. Turnitin's FAQ lists GPT-5.x, Gemini 3.x and Claude models among those its English detector was built to detect, plus tools based on them.
Is it safe to upload my paper to a free AI checker?
It depends on the service, so read its privacy policy first. Check whether your file is stored, whether you can delete it, and whether it is shared. Plagino keeps files in your account and lets you delete them from your dashboard at any time.
What files does Plagino accept, and how many scans are free?
Plagino accepts Word documents (.docx) up to 10 MB, one at a time. The free plan includes 3 scans a month, and Pro raises that to 20 scans a day.
Is the Turnitin AI checker the same as the plagiarism checker?
No. Turnitin's AI writing score and its Similarity score are calculated independently and do not influence each other. Similarity looks for text that matches existing sources, while the AI indicator estimates whether prose was machine-written.
